THE SILENCE OF OTHERS

導演 Directors

How to choose between silence and speaking out, forgetting and remembering?

In Spain in the 1970s, after 40 years of General Franco’s fascist dictatorship, silence was the source of the victims’ suffering and the accomplice of the perpetrators. The six-year filming tracked how survivors broke the silence and filed a groundbreaking international lawsuit in the Argentinian court, overcame their collective forgetting and fought for justice. Silence might not necessarily be farther from evil than dictatorship. Looking back at the past, it seems to be far and near.

Presented by Pedro Almodóvar, directed by Emmy-winning directors, the film won the Panorama Audience Award and Peace Film Prize at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival.

How could a woman use poems as an impetus for social change? In 2010, Saudi poetess Hissa Hilal made headlines across the globe as the first woman to enter the final round of "Million's Poet”, a famous million-dollar reality television show in the Arab world. Behind her black burqa and from her trembling body and voice was a strong voice of dissent which required enormous bravery. Her poems criticised Islamic fatwas and patriarchal society which suppressed women from the freedom of movement, the right to clothing and even the right to drive. Hissa persisted while there were death threats toward her and her family. Bit-by bit, the predominately male members in the society were impressed by Hissa’s poems which were deemed to be rebellious. Using poems as a weapon to alter the social system and going viral in a male-dominated society, would Hissa become the first-ever winning female in the competition?

The film was nominated for the 2018 European Film Awards and selected for the 2019 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

"Are there any problems with using two condoms while having sex?” “Can I pour a drop of lemon or orange juice into my girlfriend's vagina after intercourse to prevent pregnancy?” “How to ascertain if a girl is a virgin?” Think that these questions are too ridiculous? Such ignorance of sex knowledge was not news in India. The 91-year-old sexologist Dr. Mahinder Watsa wrote articles for the “Ask the Sexpert” newspaper column to answer people’s questions on sex. The reason behind the absurd questions was the stagnated sex education in schools. For over 40 years, Dr. Watsa’s column was like a sex education study room for millions of readers. It provided all kinds of sex advice with a generous dose of humour. However, it was taboo to talk about sex in a conservative country. Dr. Watsa was blamed for breaking social norms and morality, even facing court charges. Between praise and blame, Dr Watsa has become the completely charming "sexpert”.

The film was an Official Selection at the 2017 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Nazi, jihad, anti-fascism... If you were one of the above, how would you know when your dream is over?

As a former right-wing extremist, the director personally participated in the journey, reflecting on what she has done and the price she must pay today.

Other apostates in the United States, Germany and Denmark were interviewed, including a former left-winger in Denmark and a Frenchman who had participated in the French terrorist attack. These people used to be jihadists, Nazi members, or support anti-fascism. However, after the madness, the haze of violence still lingers. How do they coexist with their past? How to live with the regret of the wrongful decision?

This film won several awards in DOK Leipzig 2018, including the Goethe-Institut Documentary Film Prize.

OUR YOUTH IN TAIWAN

導演 Director
Yue Fu

2018

Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese & Hakka | English & Chinese subtitles

A star of the Taiwanese student movement and a celebrity Chinese student who loves Taiwan are both passionate about politics. After the “Sunflower Student Movement”, the biggest social movement in Taiwan in the past 24 years, they came closer to realising their goals, but were also gradually let down.

The coming-of-age story occurs in young lives everywhere, the youthful shared dreams of rebellion and building a better country. In the face of their own low tide of life, is it still possible to continue fighting for the ideals they pursue? Is it possible to understand and find a common ground with your presumed enemies and try to work together?

We are all used to finding answers from the "leaders". However, these questions might not be only directed to those being filmed, but also to those who are off camera – ordinary people who have free will yet are very vulnerable at the same time.

In a nine-month historic trial in 1963, Mandela and his comrades were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The people on trial and their families listened to some of the 256 hours of audio records of the trials at that time. The proud smiles seem to be telling the world that they had no regrets about their past deeds.

With animation, archival records and interviews with current survivors, the film moves back and forth between past and present, concisely and calmly picturing the democratizing of South Africa over the past 50 years. From different angles and perspectives, it elaborates on the adherence of Mandela's comrades and their families to freedom, conviction, human rights, love, responsibility, and how these beliefs are integrated with history and the individuals themselves.

This film was selected to be shown in the special screenings section of the 71st Cannes Film Festival.

"When you listen to music, your ears will make a flame." - A Taliban Judge.

With a passion for music, a group of young people in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, are risking their lives to form the first heavy metal band in Afghanistan in a secret garage. As the Taliban regarded music as Satan's dance music, the music-loving young men are facing both the thirst for freedom and the threat of death. They liberate the suppressed people through music, but at the same time are worried about their own safety. As a group of young people who love music for its own sake, what is their identity? Is music something worth betting their lives on? Leaving or staying is the proposition they have to face...
