Internet surveillance has become the norm in society. Meanwhile, leaking private information on the Internet is no longer shocking news for anyone. Under such circumstances, how can we protect ourselves when we are rarely detached from our electronic devices? Inspired by the “Citizen Lab” project produced by Dr. Ron Deibert from the University of Toronto, Black Code begins with the exploration of the Bahnhof Data Centre in Sweden and deciphers the prototype of the server used at WikiLeaks showcasing an interview with whistleblower Jon Karlung. The film production team went to Dharamsala, Pakistan and Brazil, where journalists, social movement leaders and hackers reveal the information of the insiders to the audience. The film also shows how the national security fire wall is tested, as well as the repulsive truth behind Internet surveillance undertaken by the Government. You will not want to miss this documentary in this year’s film festival!

Against the Law

Against the Law presents “the love that dare not speak its name” of Peter Wildeblood, and a valuable piece of history in England.

The United Kingdomis launching the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in its domestic law. As a contribution, the BBC produced this documentary. In 1954, Peter Wildeblood, a journalist from the Daily Mail, was charged with having sex with a handsome young man, later imprisoned. The case opened up the discussion among the public on gay love and eventually pushed forward the law reform in the UK in 1967 decriminalising sexual behavior between consenting males. This piece of history had profound influence to Hong Kong. The judgment delivered by the Coroner’s Court on the death of British police officer John MacLennan in 1980, requested that HK should follow UK in terms of decriminalising the sexual behavior between consenting males. The law reform thus came into effect in 1991.

The disclose of strong evidence of corruption by JTBC led to Pu Gui-hui’s resignation, but reporting the truth is not easy in South Korea. Since Lee Myung-bak from the conservative party became the President in 2008, at least 17 journalists have been dismissed under political pressure. The government had been using different ways to “pacify” the news media in South Korea; publicly funded television stations were manipulated by the state. Some tycoons also bought the ownerships of news media companies, made it more difficult for independent news media to survive. The latest Reporters Sans Frontieres report revealed that South Korea ranked 63rd in press freedom, stating that the government might have threatened press freedom via exerting both economic and political pressure.

Seven Years - Journalism without Journalists is a clear record showing how frontline reporters in South Korea were embodying the fourth estate i.e., the power of the press, throughout the seven years.

Ovarian Psycos is a bicycle team formed by a group of Latina women in Eastern Los Angeles. This group of women has been defending women’s rights with their wheels. Xela, the team captain of the group is a single mom, meanwhile a hip-hop singer and poet. Team member include Andi, a 24-year-old street artist, and Evelyn, a descendant of refugees from El Salvador. Facing racial and sexual discrimination, as well as unimaginable threats in their neighborhood, this group of women show their fearlessness when fighting for justice and gender equality on bicycles.

In fact, Eastern Los Angeles was the origin of the Chicano Movement in America in the 1960s, which led to the rise of Chicana feminism. On this basis, the documentary analyzes class, racial, and sexual discrimination faced by the Mexican-Latina women in American history, also shows the new side of Latina feminism rising from urban areas in America.

The Apology follows the personal journeys of three former “comfort women” who were among the 200,000 girls and young women kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Some 70 years after their imprisonment in “comfort stations”, the three grandmothers from South Korea, China, and the Philippines—face their twilight years in fading health. After decades of living in silence and shame about their past, they know that time is running out to give a first-hand account of the truth and ensure that this horrific chapter of history is not forgotten.

The Apology was filmed and produced and made over the course of seven years. Since its world premiere in 2016, it has been screened throughout Europe, Canada and America, touching the hearts of millions.

Music, one of the most important culture in Mali, disappeared overnight in 2012 when Islamic extremists groups rose up to capture its Northern part. In this light, broadcasting stations and music instruments were dismantled, while some musicians were tortured to death. To preserve the Malian musical traditions, a boyband consisting of four members risked their lives to sing the Blues. A famous female Malian singer who fled to another country, conducted a concert with the help from her refugee fellows. A guitarist would also describe how his family was killed under the enforcement of this draconian law in the documentary.

The conditions in Mali have shocked the world. Extremists have been intensifying the suppression of the freedom of culture and art, and the liberty of the people. Though the draconian law on music has been banned since 2014, the victims overseas are still afraid of going back to their homeland.

Raphael Lemkin, a young Jewish lawyer from Poland, was forced to flee to the United States alone during the Holocaust, later learned that 49 members of his family were killed in Nazi concentration camps. Lemkin was a person who believed deeply in the rule of law. He created the term “genocide” and spent most of his life pushing the United Nations to create the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Lemkin also pushed to have some sort of enforcement mechanism in place, although he did not live to see the creation of what we now know of as the International Criminal Court. Lemkin passed away in New York City alone in 1959.

Watchers of The Sky interweaves the stories of four modern humanitarian advocates, including the last surviving prosecutor from Nürnberg, while exploring the long forgotten story of Raphael Lemkin. For those who want to deepen their knowledge about the violent acts committed during World War II and modern International Criminal Law, you would not want to miss this film! 25/9(一Mon)19:15(附設映後談 Discussion after screening)

A number of villagers confronted hundreds of police officers on Mother’s Day in 2012. In this land dispute, the “wall made by the bodies of the villagers” were not strong enough to go against the gun and arms of the police, a situation Hong Kongers may be familiar with.

Nowadays, confrontations between civilians and police seem to happen more frequently all around the world. The conflict shown in The Opposition takes place in a temporary housing area inside Paga Hill, a residential area next to a harbor in Papua New Guinea. About 3,000 villagers were forced to leave their homes in the incident. Consequently, the Head of the Village confronted the tyranny via the judiciary. By doing so, it was hoped that it might prevent the village from being taken away by tycoons to build a five-star hotel. A war over land is soon to begin!

A translator from the United States Army and an Iraqi solider fell in love in the time of war. However, their love invited death threats. Extremism has been prevailing in the Middle East region, where homosexuals are prosecuted.

The production team of Out of Iraq visited four countries to uncover their 13-year love story. The documentary also documents proof of threats, faced by a pair of homosexual lovers, imposed by an anti-homosexual authoritarian government. For this reason, the only way out for the lovers was to seek refuge and flee their homes. However, it took them a great deal of time in which the lovers had to go through a series of complicated administrative procedures reviewing and examining their conditions and refugee status. This documentary was screened in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in mid-2016, showcasing the different kinds of difficulties and barriers haunting homosexual refugees.

Since the 1990s there have been a growing number of North Koreans engaged in the Jangmadang – North Korea’s very own black markets. Central to this revolution are young North Koreans, known as the Jangmadang Generation, who smuggle in and sell fashion goods and commodities such as electronics, clothes, South Korean dramas, and even pornographic material. In the jangmadang ideas about western fashion, lifestyle, freedom of love and association, and even reflections on the government are proliferated.

The Jangmadang Generation delves into the lives of a new generation of young North Koreans who are creative, brave, and eager to carve out their own future under one of the most repressive regimes in the world. It is the first documentary to explore and study the Jangmadang Generation and the lives of the people who take part in this unsanctioned movement.
