本片為2018年日內瓦國際電影節和人權論壇（International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights）開幕電影。
Only a democratic system is able to protect our freedom—but is this really the case? Russell challenges our illusions about democracy and freedom by painstakingly and repeatedly raising the questions: What is democracy? What is freedom? Whose freedom and democracy? Who is controlling and who is being controlled? Are we in the darkest times? Why are more and more elected political representatives recklessly destroying our most cherished values? The film covers events that occurred within 3 years, putting into a dialogue freedom fighters from 5 regions, including student protestors from the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement, comedians from Bollywood, a rapper from Tunisia, activists of the Black Lives Matter movement, and supporters of the conservative stance. The way the film strives to understand the rise of the Trump phenomenon and Illiberal Democracy through a global lens is what makes it a truly exceptional piece of work.
This film is the opening film for the 2018 International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights.

Content moderators are people whose job is to review thousands of images that are uploaded online every day. They have to decide within seconds which ones to keep and which ones to delete. According to the outsourcing contract, not only are they prohibited from disclosing the relevant social media platform for which they are working, but also the actual deleted content itself. The images create in them unease and discomfort, and at the same time this requirement of confidentiality barring them from seeking any assistance. The Cleaners reveals to the audience the dark side of the big data era, and seeks to probe into the issues of the restriction of free speech and infringement of human rights in both the virtual and real worlds.

In October 2016, after the South Korean press uncovered the corruption behind the Park Geun-hye presidency, 30,000 citizens organised a candlelight vigil outside Seoul City Hall, demanding the president resign from her post. As an increasing number of protestors gather, all of their tiny flames unify to become a radiant torch, forcing Park to face her charges in the Constitutional Court. Each of the 10 short films in Candle in the Wave represents a tiny flame amidst many others—a voice amongst a sea of voices—those whose homelands are threatened by the THAAD system; mourners for the victims of the Sewol-ho shipwreck; animal rights activists; women cleaners; and those who regret supporting the conservative party, vowing never to become passive outsiders again. We are living in turbulent times. Perhaps Candle in the Wave will light up our world, and perhaps, we can do the same by trying to make a difference, however small it may seem.

Ever since the violent suppression of the 2011 Arab Spring, the local authorities, the Kurdish people, ISIS and the anti-government armies have been seeking to divide Aleppo, a city located in north-western Syria, between them. For so many years the people of Aleppo have been suffering from warfare, even though their greatest wish is merely to live a peaceful life. Sieges and continuous bombing have led to the depletion of resources and widespread destruction of the city, up till the point where it has become unbearable for the citizens. Together, they set up a pro-opposition volunteer organisation, the White Helmets. By following the tracks of bomber planes, they aim to trace down and rescue survivors from the ruins using only basic equipment that they can afford. Three members of the White Helmets led Fayyad and his crew through their journey between life and death, where there is ruthless murder as well as selfless sacrifice, and where one could reach out to hope even in the darkest corners of hell.
This film was awarded the World Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival; and was a nominee for the 2018 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Qalqilya Zoo had lost many of its animals because of the two riots and the Israel-Gaza barrier. Zookeeper Dr. Sami Khader was eager to bring life back into the zoo, and was especially keen on getting a new pair of giraffes. The fact that Qalqilya Zoo is Palestine’s only zoo, and is also the world’s only zoo within an occupied region gave Khader all the more reason to spend his greatest effort in restoring it. Miraculously, it was successfully reinstated, and was entered into the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. However, Khader and his team soon found themselves in a situation more desperate than that of the caged animals in Qalqilya Zoo.

The 6 protagonists in the film come from Ghana, Kenya, India and Nepal, and they have two things in common: their identity as migrant workers, and their passion for football. The Qatar government has imported 1.6 million foreign workers for the construction of the venue in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. These migrant workers from Southeast Asia and Africa settled in a camp at the edge of the desert, far away from the city. Although they work and live together, each remained lonely due to the long working hours and language barriers. In order to promote the event at a low cost, organisers of the FIFA World Cup along with 24 building companies came up with the idea of “Workers Cup”, allowing these migrant workers to play football in the venue which they are constructing. In this scheme, the site of exploitation was transformed into a place of sport and bonding. The world, like the football, is round. Everyone and everything are connected—The Workers Cup reflects this increasing trend of globalisation.
